Zoom-Related
Children's Books
What could be more interesting to
children in grades 3 to 8 than microscopic close-ups of a fly’s
eyes, dust mites, peeling skin, dandruff, a mosquito’s proboscis,
skin scabs, and other weird, yucky things? Any teacher who has had
children use microscopes knows that they love to investigate and
share with their classmates the “gross” things they have found.
Hardly anything in science stirs kids curiosity and interest more
than microscopes and the objects and critters they can see with
them. |
Following is a sample selection of books appropriate for children of
the ages that span Grades 3 to 8 in Project MAIS ZOOM. Books such as
these can stir curiosity, be used in conjunction with microscopic
experiences, or built upon or extend classroom activities. For
example, A World in a Drop of Water, Exploring with a Microscope
can help children identify organisms children observe in a drop of
pond water or a sample from a hay infusion. Insects will
likely encourage children to find and observe their own insect
specimens. Magnificent Microworld Adventures is really a
teacher’s guide but children can use it to learn how to measure
microscopic objects, observe onion cells, and identify Protozoa.
And, Antoni Van Leeuwenhoek: First to See Microscopic Life
can provide a historical perspective.
The use of children’s books in conjunction with microscopic studies
not only stimulates more interest and understanding among children,
but most certainly enables teachers to connect science with other
curricular areas. Multiple standards such as those in Project AERO;
standards in mathematics, English/language arts, social studies, and
technology can be met or reinforced through microscopic activities
connected to children’s books. |
