“Hey, it’s an insect of some kind! Maybe a fly.” |

Ms. Centurio questions students about some of the insect’s parts
including the veined wings, antennae, and legs. She encourages them
to observe and describe what they see. |

Tables were set up in the back of the classroom to serve as “critter
tables.” |

Basic equipment—slides, cover slips, pipettes, forceps—were on a
nearby table.

This group checks out the slide on the stage of the DigiScope. |

Students see live organisms on the slides that they made.
|

They observe the heart beating in a Daphnia. |

Daphnia were particularly intriguing. More questions arose. “What do
they eat? How many times does the heart beat? Where do these things
live? What eats Daphnia?
|

Once organisms were observed, there was a rush to find others. Here
a student is using a long pipette to make a wet mount slide from
water in a hay infusion. |

Another student investigates water in the class aquarium.
